CUNY by the Numbers

  • Senior colleges: 11
  • Community colleges: six
  • Graduate and professional schools: four
  • Enrollment (Fall 1999): 199,000 full and part-time undergraduate and graduate students, in credit courses; another 167,000 are enrolled in adult or continuing education classes.
  • Racial makeup: 32 percent African American; 29 percent white; 26 percent Hispanic; 13 percent Asian.
  • Sixty-two percent of the students are female; 41 percent are 25 or older; 48 percent of first-time freshmen were born outside the United States or in Puerto Rico; 49 percent speak a native language other than English.
  • Sixty-six percent of the students work full- or part-time; 39 percent have household incomes under $20,000; 23 percent support children; 61 percent attended New York City public schools.
  • Full-time faculty: 5,598
  • Part-time faculty: 7,406
  • Annual operating budget: $1.3 billion
