Instructions for Conducting Searches of a PDF Document

Below you will find instructions on how to search a pdf document.

  1. Open the pdf file using Adobe Acrobat Reader. (If you do not have the software, you can download it free from Adobe at
  2. Click on the binoculars icon on the Acrobat Reader toolbar.
  3. An "Acrobat Find" window will appear. Type in the word(s) you want to search for in the search box next to "Find What."
    Specific to National CrossTalk Index:
    • To search by the article's title, type in the title
    • To search by the article's author, type in the author's last name. You can narrow your search by typing in the author's last name followed by a comma, single space, and their first name (e.g. Trombley, William).
    • To search by the article's subject, type in the subject.
    Specific to Reports and Other Publications:
    • Type in the search term
  4. Click on the "Find" button next to the search box. The page will move to the first occurrence of the search term in the Index. The search term will be highlighted.
    • If the search term does not exist in the Index, a window will appear that says "No occurrences of: 'search term' were found in the document."
      Click on the "OK" button. Type a new search term into the window.
    • If the search term does exist in the Index, and you want to move to each next occurrence of the search term, click on the "Find Again" box.
Note: Instructions may vary depending upon your version of Acrobat Reader.
