Affirmative Action: There's No Valid Surrogate for Race
- A look at the failed attempt by University of California admission officials
to select a freshman class that reflects the diversity of California while abiding
by the University of California Regents mandate that there should be no "affirmative
action" for groups that the University describes as "underrepresented,"
including African Americans, Latinos and American Indians.The survey, conducted by
Public Agenda for the new National Center, also found that 89 percent of the American
public believes that no qualified and motivated student should be denied a college
education because of cost.
